Background of the study
Peer pressure is a significant factor influencing the behavior of young individuals, particularly in relation to drug abuse. In Ahoada East, the susceptibility of youth to peer influence has been identified as a critical factor contributing to the rise in drug-related activities. Adolescents, in their quest for social acceptance and identity, may succumb to peer pressure that encourages risky behaviors, including the use of illicit substances (Obioma, 2023). The environment in which young people interact—schools, social gatherings, and online platforms—often serves as a breeding ground for behaviors that may lead to drug experimentation and subsequent abuse. Psychological and sociological studies have shown that peer dynamics can override parental guidance and personal judgment, resulting in patterns of substance use that can have long-lasting consequences (Ejekam, 2024). Additionally, the interplay between social status, the desire for acceptance, and the influence of media contributes to normalizing drug abuse among youth. These factors, when combined with limited awareness of the dangers of drug use, escalate the risk of substance dependency and its associated negative outcomes. The present study investigates how peer pressure influences youth drug abuse in Ahoada East, aiming to shed light on the underlying mechanisms and propose interventions that can mitigate these adverse behaviors (Ibrahim, 2025).
Statement of the problem
In Ahoada East, drug abuse among youth has emerged as a significant public health and social issue. Peer pressure, manifested through various social interactions and online influences, is a major contributor to this problem (Obioma, 2023). Young individuals, seeking social validation, often engage in substance use as a means of conforming to group norms. This behavior not only endangers their health but also predisposes them to long-term addiction and social maladjustment. Despite efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of drug use, the strong influence of peers continues to undermine preventive measures. The lack of effective intervention programs and support systems further exacerbates the situation, leaving many young people vulnerable to the harmful effects of drug abuse (Ejekam, 2024). The persistent rise in drug-related incidents calls for an in-depth investigation into the role of peer pressure in facilitating these behaviors. Without targeted interventions, the problem may continue to escalate, affecting the overall social and economic development of the community (Ibrahim, 2025).

Significance of the study
This study is important as it explores the critical impact of peer pressure on youth drug abuse in Ahoada East. Its findings will inform policymakers and community leaders about the key factors driving this behavior and support the development of targeted intervention programs to safeguard the well-being of young people (Obioma, 2023; Ejekam, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to investigating the influence of peer pressure on youth drug abuse within Ahoada East Local Government Area. It does not cover other factors unrelated to peer influence or other regions.
